Costa Rican Typico – Typical!

On a road trip, I stopped at a little “Typico,” which mean typical restaurant, in Costa Rica. I had eaten and swallowed everything in my cooler from chocolate covered coffee beans to Mentos to two bottles of coconut water. Wasn’t doing the job. Finally, after many hold ups for construction, I made it to a place. I ordered the “casado de la casa,” which is the married plate. Basically a large amount of ingredients end up on the plate, married. If I wandered to the restaurant across the road, they’d have the same thing. It’s actually a sure thing at any typical restaurant. And it’s cheap. If you stay away from the pork rinds, nothing’s fried and it’s pretty good for you.

I pulled out my computer to read something I had downloaded and to my surprise! Internet connection. Who’d have thought in the middle of Central America, in a small mountain town I could read about the latest news on the latest book that’s come out about Diana. It’s freaky. A marriage made in heaven.

    I see no surprise there! This is a young country, with less than 5 mill people, few resources, and people like me, who gives the major effort to help this country growth. Let’s not think that every country in the world should be like the states. No, and let’s not think that every country in the world should be like Costa Rica. People are unique every where you go. there are good things and bad things.
    All I see are “Friends shaking hands saying how do you do” …

    So where was this restaurant? I am moving back to CR next month and all my work is done via the Internet. I like the idea of going to a restaurant and checking my emails, and not have to be a gringo bar.

    Who wants to be like the States? Well a few more sidewalks would be nice…!

    And for the restaurant, it’s called Comalitos. It’s on the right hand side of the road just outside of the mountain pass on the way to Limon.

    Just finishing cooking some casado here in Denver, CO. Your website is very informative and comprehensive–appreciate that a lot. Just back from 10 days in San Jose, La Fortuna, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. Please tell me one thing–are Ticos that nice mainly to tourists or are they generally so friendly and genuine?

    Glad you enjoyed Costa Rica. You took a route I’ve taken a few of my own friends on and it’s a good sampling of the country.

    I’d have to say, yes. The people here are just that nice. I am humbled when i meet people, often in poverty or really struggling, who are just willing to look you in the eyes, welcome you, and say mucho gusto. It’s the advantage, in some ways of not having a life like we know in the fast paced U.S. There are disadvantages, and of course things that don’t work so well, but the nice is truly genuine.
